The kindergarten
curriculum for five-year-olds is divided into four daily activity
segments. The curriculum offers lesson plans from September through
May with a two week's break at Christmas and one week in the spring.
Some people use this curriculum strictly “as is” curriculum while
some parents use it as an idea book for things to do on weekends or
evenings.
The
only subject that is covered every day is the Bible Study. The
kindergarten version covers a different Old Testament holiday each
month (Yom Kippur, Hanukkah, Passover, Purim, etc.). For each holiday
you have a variety of activities including worksheets, crafts,
cooking, coloring pages, Bible stories, and looking up Bible verses.
Each month also has a memory verse. Included in the Pattern Section
of the book you will find a Bible Verse chart and place to put up
stickers or happy faces as your child memorizes each verse.
Monday
through Friday you also cover three of the following topics each day:
Language Arts, Music, Creative Arts (crafts or expressive art),
Arithmetic, Social Studies, Sign Language, Cooking, Science/Health,
Readiness Skills, and Field trips. The only subject I do not cover
completely is Phonics. I just don't fell qualified to write a
complete phonics program. But there are many sources on the web and
even more available in homeschool bookstores. Many programs cost less
than $20.00 while others can cost a few hundred dollars. Each parent
will need to find a system that works for their child. I do cover
letters and their sounds in the curriculum, just not the process of
putting them all together.
The
Hands on Homeschooling binder also includes a Prep and Planning
section which gives you guidelines for planning ahead and being
prepared for the lessons. It has an overall supply list and and several pages of general homeschooling
information. In the rear of the binder there is an Alternate
Activities section which lists additional activities to choose from
should you not want to do a specific activity as listed in the lesson
plan. You will also find a list of helpful websites where you can
find a lot of additional activities and recipes.
